Our Formation
Society for the Aged Ghana (SOFAG) is non-governmental, nondenominational and non-profit making organization, established, in 2003 by fifty members (50) at Seneh Bokankye Atwima Nwabiagya District of Ashanti Region, to promote the well-being of older persons in our society/Ghana. It is well recognized in Ghana with population of over 8,700 currently.
Our Mission
To advance the interest and welfare of older persons in Ashanti Region/Ghana as a whole, regardless of sex, creed and colour.
Our Objectives
To create public awareness on ageing issues and the problems facing older persons.
To initiate and assist organizations working with and for older person in society to develop appropriate community-based services for them.
To assist in the initiation and development through research and advocacy of Pragmatic polices and services for older person.
To associate with the promotion of friendship and unity among members.
To aid and support members in case of misfortunes. The society shall not be for attending funerals; weddings etc. however, if a member dies the group will meet to decide on what to do.
To convene periodic meeting at which problems confronting or facing members could be discussed with the view to finding solutions to them.
Organizational Structure
Society for the Aged Ghana (SOFAG) works through a threefold structure. The first is a 7-member board which is the highest decision-making body and also responsible for the general control of the organization.
A secretariat which is responsible for the implementation of the policies of the Board and monthly administration of the organization forms of the second level.
The third structure is the zones (community-based aged care groups). There are a lot of chapters in Kumasi each comprising of a leader and a core of volunteers who work in their respective communities of the elderly. The zones serve as a link between the various groups for the aged. The zonal group provides services such as visitation and assisting in the basic domestic chores for the elderly in the community.
Achievements
Through various forms of education, they have been advised how to handle certain problems and leave a comfortably life.
The society has educated the youth to desist from indecent sexual activities in most part of our country (Ghana).
The society has been organizing a number of clean up campaigns.
The society has educated the Aged in Ghana not to ask for arms.
SOFAG advocates for appropriate policies and programmes aimed at promoting positive ageing life in the Ashanti Region /Ghana. In order to build the capacity of partner Organizations, also effectively undertake advocacy activities.
SOFAG organized series of training in Advocacy Techniques between 2007 and 2008 and also continued from 2015 – 2017 for them, including pension associations with some physically challenged groups.
The Gender Ministry though this NGO has been sensitizing the public in special programmes when the need arises.
The organizations have acquired one acre of land at Toase Atwima Nwabiagya District in the Ashanti Region which was donated by The Late Hon. Nana Asiamah Opoku Afrifa Il. Moreover, Nana Jakob Omanhene have donated one plot to as for development.
We donated concrete sign post to needy schools in many districts of our country.
Awards
Society for the Aged Ghana (SOFAG) was awarded by the Regional Coordinating Council (R.C.C) during the leadership of the Hon. S.K. Boafo as the Most Active Aged Care Group in the Ashanti Region on 1st July 2005 and by the Ministry of Manpower, Youth Employment and Social Welfare, Accra under the auspices of Hon. Cecilia Banamang respectively.
Future Plans
It is the vision of the society that through our efforts, no Aged would be seen begging for alms by 2020.
We need piece of land to build Aged centre/Aged home in every Region in Ghana.
